What I thought was just a cult classic for so long wound up becoming so much more. How each game was telling its own exciting story with interesting characters. I saw how the gameplay and visuals evolved over the years. Realizing that the epic story driven Game Boy game I had played as a child was only the first in a series lead me to do more research. After that, I started noticing more familiar things, such as certain items or enemies. "This carries the spirit of Tales of Phantasia!" I thought to myself. It wasn't until I saw the move Swallow Kick being used that it clicked. The settings, the characters, the battle system, all of it filled me with nostalgia somehow. As the story unfolded, and as I watched the gameplay, things started feeling oddly familiar. It wasn't until recently that I was watching some gameplay for a cool looking new game called Tales of Arise that I finally saw what I was missing. Looking back, I'm baffled at how blind I was. I had been hearing about Tales of Symphonia and Abyss, but I didn't think they were connected in any way. (Me and my siblings roleplayed the heck out of that game as kids) But I never heard anyone else talk about the game, and whenever I looked it up, I could never find much about it beyond the other versions of the game (which I ignored because I was nostalgia biased). It was my first ever JRPG and the game that made me realize the story telling potential of video games. I grew up playing Tales of Phantasia on the GBA. This is kind of a long story, but I have completely missed the Tales series for the last 20 years.
